Amritsar – A Paradise for Foodies, Mallrat and Explorer
Amritsar is synonymous with food, yes ! after the famous Golden Temple built centuries ago and the surreal Wagah border and the daily parade that takes place there , if one should go to Amritsar then it should definitely be for its food.
You just don’t only get a nice slice of punjabi culture, you get the real heart of it which ironically beats in pure “desi ghee”(saturated oil) .

A small town like Amritsar still has tons to offer and a two – three day trip to the same is extremely easily feasible. Though the ideal time to visit Amritsar is in early winters if one has not ever visited the town, but if one has then summers would be the right time too, though it may restrict you to moving out of the house only in the morning and the evenings .
Needless to say that the Golden Temple is a wonder in it’s own with one of the grandest “parikrama”.
The Jallianwallan Bagh not only contains the infamous well in which thousands of Indians jumped in order to save their lives but also very interesting artifacts and data about the British Raj. One reads about it all the time but to go about the data yourself and see the kind of work they planned to do or did in India is just unbelievable and incredible.

A colossal painting of the fateful event hangs right in the centre of the petite museum maintained by the state to which the entry is free of cost. Amritsar is a food haven and this is something that I discovered in my last trip to the same last year. “Kesar da Dhaba” offers authentic vegetarian meals at of course really cheap rates ;yet the quality of food is absolutely amazing.

The part I liked the best is the “phirni”, a punjabi sweet delicacy and this dhaba serves the best of all the ones I have tasted yet.

You cannot miss the “jaleba” , an extravagant version of “jalebi” in Katra Ahluwalia, uncannily sumptuous !!

The treat is not up yet for you can also visit the Crytal Chowk for the very famous “Brijwassi’s aaloo tikki” (potato patty) with bun and chana (chickpeas).

Not many people are aware of this tangy treat of Amritsar, or at least are not aware of the best place to get it from .If that’s the case then fear not , the small cart outside DAV Girls College on Lawrence Road is the best place , and I can say this safely, in entire north India to get varieties of “aampapad” and if you want true punjabi taste then this is it . DO NOT MISS THIS TREAT , AT ALL !

For shopping the local commodities of good quality especially the famous “punjabi jutti” ( a type of shoe for both men and women) “the Pink Plaza” is a good choice and if one wants to buy fabric for suits , kurtis et-cetra then they can head to the “Atta Mandi” where bargaining is the trick to buy .

Amritsar is a place to be found on foot , its bylanes and alleys are full of miraculous things then you would discover only if you went through and into them.
Also , try and not buy goods from people selling it around the main parking for the main market offers greater choice and better prices.
